Children in Need 2023 – Plant Mewn Angen
The Milford Haven School Senior Prefect’s teamed up with the Heads of House to once again launch a fantastic schedule of events to raise money for Children in Need. Last week saw the launch of the first ever MHS Battle of The Bands and MHS Talent Show. We also saw the return of the ever popular Bush Tucker Trails, sweet shops and chocolate bags. The pupils took on the teachers in Beat the Teacher and Friday we saw everything from giant dinosaurs to Mario, Lugi and friends. 
 
Thank you to everyone who donated money, took part in the events and took on the challenges.

MHS Tags on The Tree on Tour
Every year staff at MHS have taken part in Tags on The Tree for the Patch Charity annual Toy Appeal but this year we had multiple requests from our community who wanted to support and so we have decided to take it on tour.

There are three trees in out in the community featuring tags with anonymised details of children in our catchment area that are part of the Patch Charity Toy Appeal.
 
If you want to get involved pop in and pick your tag, purchase a gift up to the value of £10 and pop it back under the tree. Presents will be delivered to Patch Charity on the 5th December.
 
The trees are located in Neyland Library, Milford Haven Library and Hubberston and Hakin Community Centre. 
Christmas Fayre

We can’t wait to welcome you all to the annual Christmas Fayre on Thursday 7th December. From 6pm you can come and do your Christmas shopping with a wide variety of fantastic local businesses selling some amazing products ready for you to do your Christmas shopping.
 
Wonderfully festive refreshments will be available from luxury hot chocolate from Get Loaded to homemade Welshcakes, brownies and of course mince pies.
 
Please note photographs and video will be taken at this event for marketing and PR purposes. If you wish to opt out of having your photograph taken please see a member of staff.
Transition Roadshow 2023
Miss Mansell is hitting the road once again for the MHS Transition Roadshow 2023.
In November and December she will be visiting the primary schools within our catchment area to tell you all about life at MHS.
She is very excited to meet the future superstars that will be joining MHS in September 2024 and will be around after school for any parents and carers who might have some questions.
In the photos below you can see the dates and times that Miss Mansell will be at each school but don’t worry as we will post reminders the Monday before.
She looks forward to meeting you all on this year’s Transition Roadshow.
MHS School Production 🎭
We are delighted to share with you the poster for this year’s school production. The MHS Drama Club present to you a magical MHS adaptation of Cinderella on February 6th, 7th and 8th. Tickets go on sale in December.
As always we are offering local businesses the opportunity to sponsor the show and advertise in our programme. By sponsoring the production you are helping the Drama Club continue to put on these fantastic performances.

Reading at MHS – Darllen yn yr MHS
As part of our reading strategy here at MHS we will be posting weekly top tips and hints.
This week’s post is a series of effective tips on a wide range of ideas of the types of questions you can ask your child during and after they have read:
1. Ask your child to make predictions about what they have read and find out what they already know. Look at the front cover, read the first page and chapter, meet the first character and ask what do you think will happen next? Make predictions and ask opinions.
2. Encourage your child to visualise the text by encouraging them to create pictures in the mind of the characters, setting and plot.
3. Ask lots of questions! Read together, with each other. Ask questions using: Who? What? When? Why? Where?
4. Ask your child to summarise what they have read. Ask what has happened? Summarise what the character has just done.
5. There are a wide variety of independent tasks your child can complete, for example: listen to an audiobook, design a new front cover for a book they have read, write a miniature book using 1 piece of A4, record a 1-minute book review, read a news story and summarise it in 30 words.

AOLE Highlights

This week's highlights from our AOLE departments.
Da iawn to this hard working Bay pupil who has achieved 100% on his accelerated reader 5 times!
Outdoor learning with Year 9 Built Environment found a break in the weather and completed their induction surveying unit. A series of challenges including measuring the height of the gym, the perimeter of the field and how level the rugby pitch is were completed. The class enjoyed learning how the Dumpy Surveying Level worked and developed some complex maths skills in a real context.

This week's highlights from our sports teams

After a successful tournament, some of our u14’s played a fixture against Haverfordwest High and continued their winning streak!
The girls played one of their longest matches yet, and some stepped up to the challenge and played out of position, which was great to see them be so versatile. The girls are working hard to put their training into action and Miss Griffiths couldn’t be prouder.

Players player– Pippa J – she continued her excellent display of hockey creating lots of opportunities for the team to be on the attack.
Coaches Player– Annabelle G – for making an incredible save that kept the teams score sheet on zero and assisting in the goals.
Year 7 played their first netball match, they showed good potential considering they only had 5 players. I’m sure with more practice they will be more successful!
Coaches player– Amelia C
Year 11 took on an excellent HH side who gave them a challenge. The girls showed some elements of good netball but had a lot to learn from that match. Keep working!

Cluster Band
The new Milford Haven Cluster band is rehearsing in Steynton Hall from 1.30 – 3.00pm on a Friday afternoon. This band is an exciting new opportunity for pupils throughout the Milford Haven Cluster to perform with others. If you would like to take part, please speak to Mr. Sanders-Swales or Mrs. Jenkins in the music department.

📢 Attention all parents, staff, and visitors! 🚸🚙
We would like to remind everyone that the safety of our students is our utmost priority, especially during pick-up times. Please refrain from parking in the lower car park as it obstructs the smooth flow of traffic and you will have to wait for the groups of pupils going over the zebra crossing. Please be patient with us.
🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️ When the bell rings and children are leaving, please remember that pedestrians have the right of way at the zebra crossing. Blocking their path or driving aggressively puts our pupils’ safety at risk.
🚫 Let’s all practice patience and take turns responsibly, allowing everyone to leave the premises safely. We appreciate your cooperation.

Uniform Shop – Siop wisg
If you have any MHS uniform at home that your child has grown out of please consider donating it to the MHS pre-loved uniform shop. We have an on-site uniform shop that pupils and parents can access anytime they need for jumpers, t-shirts, trousers, coats and more. Any donations are greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at reception. We are needing some larger size sweatshirts and t-shirts.
Important Announcement – Cyhoeddiad Pwysig
An important reminder that Milford Haven School is a nut free school.
We have several pupils with nut allergies and more who have joined us this September.
Please remember not to bring nuts into school. This includes all nut types and all products containing nut based spreads such as Nutella and Peanut Butter.
If you are unsure if something contains nuts please check all packaging for allergy information.

GCSE POD is a fantastic resource which Milford Haven School continues to promote amongst learners and their parents/carers.

GCSE POD holds a wealth of support for a range of subjects, with some content specific for KS3 as well as KS4. Learners are encouraged to use their MHS Google log-in to access the site and start exploring the site which could prove extremely beneficial for our KS4 learners.
