Croeso i’n digwyddiad rithwir Cynnydd Disgyblion ar gyfer Blwyddyn 11, welcome to our first ever virtual Pupil Progress Evening for our Year 11 pupils & their families.

Pupil Progress Evenings are some of the most important events of the school year, providing you with an opportunity to discuss your child’s current progress and achievements. We are disappointed to be unable to host face to face events but as you will be aware we are all working in very challenging circumstances, and as a result of the coronavirus restrictions we have had to make changes to how we stay connected to our school community.

We feel it is very important that you are able to have contact with our Strategic Leader for Key Stage 4 (Mrs Michelle Griffiths), as such we offered all parents and carers of Year 11 pupils the opportunity to book a slot for a telephone call today from this key member of our senior team.  We hope that those of you who registered for a call today found it beneficial, we are glad to see so many of our families utilised this opportunity for a general update on how your child is progressing.

As well as having the opportunity today for a personal phone call from Mrs Griffiths (Strategic Leader for Key Stage 4), we have also we have launched our first ever virtual Pupil Progress Event on our website for all Year 11 pupils. On this page you will be able to find a brief summary of what your children are covering in their taught subjects, gain advice and strategies on what you can do at home to support your child’s learning, and also find contact information to link in with subject teachers. Today on Thursday 19th November you will be able to email your child’s class teacher with any subject specific questions or queries you have. Staff will respond to your emails that same day, during the allocated time slot of 3.30-6.30pm when we would have hosted our face to face event.

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to you all; as Headteacher of Milford Haven School it really is my pleasure to share with you tonight our very first virtual Pupil Progress Evening. Year 11 is possibly the most important year in a young person’s learning journey, the culmination of over a decade of studying, and so we hope you find benefit from this online opportunity for an update on your child’s progress in their chosen subjects.

Maths & Numeracy.
Since returning in September Year 11 pupils have sat a Maths GCSE Mock paper. This mock was marked by their class teacher and diagnostic feedback for each paper was provided to every student. This has helped enable class teachers to identify weakness within the group and target these areas in lessons.
Teachers are now preparing year 11 for a Numeracy GCSE mock paper in December, a topic list has been posted onto the google classrooms to enable pupils to prepare. Individual teachers have identified a break time when they are available for revision sessions.

Top tips for revision and home study:
. Use the diagnostic feedback and watch videos on topics that have been highlighted red.
. Try some of the practise questions and ensure you mark the work you have completed
. Use WJEC question bank to create a mock paper on the topics that require attention. It will also create a mark scheme for you.
. GCSE pod. https://www.gcsepod.com/ – Search Pods on topics that you are focusing on.
English Language & English Literature.
During half-term 1, students have studied the text ‘Heroes’ in preparation for their English Literature qualification. Currently, they are completing preparation for a Macbeth NEA (non examination assessment).

Try to make sure that all home learning in English is ‘active’, i.e. that revision tasks are timed and focused on improving a particular aspect of your child’s learning.

To support home learning, Y11 pupils have been reminded recently via their year group’s Google Classroom, of the fantastic resource GCSE POD.  GCSE POD is designed to support the GCSE curriculum and so is of great benefit for all pupils in years 9-11. Pupils have been reminded how to access the website via their MHS email addresses, to the right is a short video explaining in more detail GCSE POD and what it has to offer.

A quick message from our Head of House team, and a reminder that they are here to support you with any pastoral issues or concerns which may arise.

Thank you for joining us for our first online Pupil Progress Evening. I have spoken to many of you on the telephone today for a general update on your child’s progress, and now you have had the opportunity to link directly with subject teachers. Some of you may not have been able to catch up with us today, or may feel like at this time you do not require our support, but please remember that we are here to help and are always at the end of the phone or an email when needed.
