Headteacher’s blog 01.07.2022

Shwmae, and welcome back to another blog. We have had many reasons to celebrate this week at Milford Haven School but one of our highlights was welcoming back our Year 11 and Year 13 leavers from 2021 to finally celebrate their success face to face in their Senior Certificate Evening. It was lovely to see you all again, good luck in your future and please come back to visit to tell us about your life adventures.

Celebrating last week's

Classchart Champions

Outdoor learning with National Parks
Some of our curious Humanities pupils had a glorious day of learning out and about in our local environment with the National Parks. Pupils were accompanied to the Castle Pill and while getting their steps in they completed species identification, pond dipping, and a health check on the streams. Pupils examined historical and geographical features of this beautiful out door classroom right on MHS‘s doorstep!
Year 9 and 10 Bay school trips
Year 9 and 10 students in The Bay have had a bumper week of trips. On Tuesday they had the opportunity to visit Milford Haven Museum as part of STEM week to improve their numeracy skills by imagining they were lost at sea and had to navigate their way home. This was based on a real life event that happened back in the 1800s with whalers from Milford Haven.

On Wednesday they took part in the Prince’s Trust Celebration event at Heatherton with the bonus that they had some free time to have a go on some of the park’s activities, from practicing how to drive on the go karts and bumper boats to navigating their way out of the hedge maze. They were seen jumping for joy on the trampolines and conquering heights on the zip line. Both trips had other visitors commending the students on how well they represented Milford Haven School. Da iawn to them all.
STEM Roadshow
Last week, every child in Years 7 & 8 were treated to a STEM roadshow from BAE Systems in collaboration with the RAF and Royal Navy. They explored cutting edge concepts within the world of STEM through an interactive assembly that will hopefully have inspired our next generation of STEM ambassadors. Diolch to all involved.
BBC Young Reporter
Milford Haven School is delighted to announce Riley, a winner in the highly prestigious BBC Young Reporter 2022 competition. Riley beat off competition from thousands of other young people when, through his participation in MHS DigiMag, he entered the competition with a pitch for a news report about the impact on young people of having a parent in the army.

His heartfelt piece to camera clearly impressed the illustrious judging panel of BBC programme editors and commissioners as well as celebrated presenters and reporters including Huw Edwards, Naga Munchetty from BBC News and The One Show’s Alex Jones.

Riley will now work with a production team from the BBC to make his report which will then be broadcast across a range of BBC platforms.

Awesome work, Riley, and we can’t wait to see the final film!

Sport Leadership Programme
Over ten weeks, Year 9 Bay students have been taking part in a Sport Leadership programme run by Disability Sport Wales and Sport Pembrokeshire. This course has developed their leadership skills through running and playing a variety of Parasports, such as Boccia and Blind Football.

Welsh Champion
A massive llongyfarchiadau a da iawn to MHS pupil Mia who competed in Blackpool last weekend in the Welsh Championships and not only competed, but won the U16s Starter Lyrical division to become Welsh Champion. We are very proud of you Mia!

Water sports with Windswept
A group of students enjoyed another brilliant day with Windswept and Pembrokeshire Youth Services in Dale on Thursday. This week they had a go at windsurfing, a first for most of them. Once again, the group were superb in their conduct, determination and support for one another. Next week they will be back on the SUPs to learn rescue techniques and reading the tide, both very valuable skills.

GCSE POD is a fantastic resource which Milford Haven School continues to promote amongst learners and their parents/carers.

GCSE POD holds a wealth of support for a range of subjects, with some content specific for KS3 as well as KS4. Learners are encouraged to use their MHS Google log-in to access the site and start exploring the site which could prove extremely beneficial for our KS4 learners.

Below is a link to the young person’s mental health toolkit from HWB, designed for 11 to 25-year-olds. Here you will find six playlists to direct you to a wide range of online resources to help you through the lockdown and beyond. In each of the playlists you’ll find self-help websites, apps, helplines, and more that are here to support your mental health and well-being.
Please remember: if you’re finding it difficult to cope, make sure you speak to someone you trust. Who this might be is different for everyone, but it might include family members or carers, a teacher, a helpline, or a doctor. How you feel is important and lots of people are here to help if you need them.
